FIELD: organic chemistry. SUBSTANCE: bromine is extracted by oxidation with molecular chlorine in the presence of hydrochloric acid (concentration is 2-3 M) and low-polar solvent (dichloroethane, methylene chloride, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, toluene, benzene). Process is carried out at 0-8 C under control of redox potential. Chlorine feeding is stopped at potential value 965 ± 5 mV followed by extraction of an aqueous layer. Bromine yield is 90-96%, chlorine consumption is 100-130% of theory. Method can be used for bromine extraction after amination reaction in levomycetin synthesis.
