FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: invention can be used in chemical engineering of inorganic substances. The method of extracting bromine from natural water to obtain metal bromides involves oxidation of bromide to elementary bromine with chlorine and separation of bromine from the initial solution. Chlorine used for oxidising the bromide ion is obtained through decomposition of a chloride salt in two double-compartment electrolysis cells separated by a cation-exchange membrane. Bromine is separated from the initial solution through blowing, extraction and sorption. After that bromine is extracted from the carrier phase through its contact with a circulating catholyte which is then fed into a first - main electrolysis cell, where bromine is reduced on the cathode with release of a bromide of a metal of the same-name chloride salt. The cathode of the second auxiliary electrolysis cell is used to decompose water with release of hydrogen in an amount equivalent to the amount of oxygen formed during anode production of chlorine.

EFFECT: invention enables to obtain metal bromides using cheap chlorides of corresponding metals as initial reagents and avoid use of bromine reducing agents.
