FIELD: electrolytic metal production. SUBSTANCE: magnesium chloride raw material is loaded into electrolyte flow containing less than 12% magnesium chloride to raise its content to 15-35%. Smelt is heated to 660-740 C and refined using chlorine-containing gases and/or in-gravity deposition of suspended solids, whereupon smelt is subjected to electrolytic cleavage and magnesium thus produced is transferred into separation stage, after which separated electrolyte is returned to be enriched with magnesium chloride and/or to dilute smelt from refinement stage, and/or to be withdrawn as fertilizer. EFFECT: simplified process flowsheet and improved quality of raw material. 8 cl
