FIELD: water treatment. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to electrolytically disinfecting water by way of simultaneously affecting it in anode chambers of two double-chamber electrolyzers with cation-exchange membranes for atomic oxygen, carbonic acid, and hydrated hydrogen peroxide ions. Process consists in introducing sodium hydrocarbonate aqueous solution with pH 10.5- 11.5 into anode chamber of the first electrolyzer and the same solution with pH 8.5-9.0 into anode chamber of the second electrolyzer resulting in producing, after anode chamber of the first electrolyzer, anolyte with pH 3-4 which is transferred into the both chambers of the second electrolyzer, and producing drinking water with pH 7.0-8.5 after cathode chamber of the second electrolyzer. Anolyte produced in the second electrolyzer is combined with initial water prior to be introduced into chambers of the first electrolyzer, whereas catholyte from the latter is withdrawn outwards.
