FIELD: organic chemistry. SUBSTANCE: 4-methoxy-2-tert.-butylphenols (I) (alkyl: ethyl- propyl-) were synthesized by treatment of 4-chloroalkyl-2,6-di-tert.-butylphenols with sodium methylate (or sodium hydroxide solution in methanol) at heating followed by thermolysis of the formed 4-methoxyalkyl-2,6-di-tert. -butylphenols at 280-290 C. Method provides synthesis of metoprolol analogs. EFFECT: improved technology, enhanced purity of intermediate compounds and metoprolol.
