SUBSTANCE: method involves shaping of image of water surface with moving target by means of synthetic- aperture radar operating as mapping radar, measurement of displacement of radar image along longitudinal coordinate of ship relative to origin of its trace, measurement of angle between longitudinal coordinate of radar image and tangent to origin of ship trace image axis, and computation of ship's speed vector module using formula given in description of invention. Used as tangent to origin of ship trace image axis are: tangent to origin of ship wake image; bisecting line of angle between tangents to origins of images of diverging branches of Kelvin waves.
