FIELD: mechanical engineering; downhand welding of long welds, including girth welds. SUBSTANCE: downhand welding of weld seams is carried out with heating of material edges and melting of flux by eddy currents, additional heating, increasing flowability and improving forming of filler material. For this purpose special downhand welding device is used. Device is installed over edges to be welded together, flux is filled in and melted by eddy currents and weld veeing is filled up with molten flux. Then electroslag welding is started: electrode is connected to supply source, slag pool is heated to operating process temperature. Filler material is melted and, lowering down, fills up weld vee forming filler material pool and forcing upwards molten flux. Filler material, coming in contact with material of edges, forms high quality weld joint. With workpieces to be welded and device displaced relative to each other new sections of seam vee get under device are heated by eddy currents, filled up with molten filler material, formed and cooled thus forming long weld seams.
