FIELD: high-temperature treatment of metals. SUBSTANCE: this can be used for surfacing layers of materials, producing multilayer articles and restoring worn surfaces. Overlaying on horizontal surfaces and surfaces of bodies of revolution is effected by electroslag process when molten additive material which settles down and is additionally heated by eddy current and flows out through hole and is formed into faced layer. Device for hard-facing has metal mould, inductor and crystallizer. For operation, device is installed on surface, flux is filled, inductor is connected to power source circuit, electroslag process is initiated, and additive material is delivered. Molten additive material produced due to thermal process and eddy current lowers down. When slag and metal baths reach determined level, device is started to be moved along working surface or this surface is moved relative to device. Molten additive material gets into inductor operating zone, is heated there, goes under crystallizer, contacts it and is formed into layer, hardens and creates layer of hard-facing material of determined thickness. Device ensures hard-facing layer of any thickness including layers with thickness of 1-10 mm; electroslag process is stable irrespective of hard-facing thickness; hard-faced layers require no further mechanical treatment.
