FIELD: chemical technology for production of pigments, more particularly paint industry. SUBSTANCE: claimed method comprises water soluble zinc salt in alkaline polysulfur solution formed by dissolving alkali and sulfur, separating zinc sulfide deposit from mother liquor, and roasting it. Zinc salt is treated in solution formed by dissolving potassium hydroxide and sulfur in circulating solution resulting from demineralization of mother liquor, and zinc sulfide deposit is washed with 0.05-1.0% solution of potassium chloride, preferably with 0.1-0.8% solution of potassium chloride. After washing zinc sulfide deposit, potassium sulfide solution is treated with hypochlorite. EFFECT: improved pigment properties of zinc sulfide simplified and ecologically safer method. 3 cl, 1 dwg, 3 tbl
