FIELD: nonferrous metallurgy, in particular, production of sponge titanium alloyed with oxygen by magnesium-thermal reduction of titanium tetrachloride. SUBSTANCE: method includes production of titanium tetrachloride with high content of oxygen in the form of oxygen-containing compound of vanadium oxytrichloride with reduction of titanium tetrachlorine with magnesium and vacuum separation of produced reaction mass. In this case vanadium oxytrichloride is used in the form of pure vanadium oxytrichloride or in the form of its solution in titanium tetrachloride being a product of rectification of titanium tetrachloride from vanadium, or as titanium tetrachloride with high content of oxygen used in the form of titanium tetrachloride purified up to vanadium content of 0.01-0.2 wt.-% in the form of its oxytrichloride.
