FIELD: nuclear industry and associated fields of activity. SUBSTANCE: γ-radiation from specimen of material being identified is measured in γ-quanta energy range of 40 to 3000 keV; This energy range is divided into energy sub ranges with known fixed boundaries. Recorded γ-quanta are integrally counted within these energy sub ranges and integral counts obtained are compared; material is identified by correlation between these counted values. Measurements are ceased either at operator's will or automatically as soon as desired number of γ-quanta recorded in all energy sub ranges is obtained. EFFECT: facilitated procedure. 6 cl
