FIELD: methods for producing metallic magnesium and pure magnesium oxide. SUBSTANCE: metallic magnesium and pure magnesium oxide are produced by carbon-thermic reduction of initial material, for instance, magnesium oxide containing minor amounts of oxides of Fe, Si, Ca and Al and/or magnesium-silicate minerals, for instance, olivine, at pressure below atmospheric one. Metallic magnesium is evaporated from reduction zone, and in the second zone of condensation pure metallic magnesium and pure magnesium oxide are precipitated. Silicon is partially evaporated in the form of SiO which is precipitated in the first condensation zone located before the second condensation zone, and partially converted in reaction mixture into SiC and alloy of Si and Fe. Initial materials may also be processed by the method in which their magnesium component is converted in reaction mixture into magnesium oxide, while remaining components are converted into SiC and alloy of Si and Fe, Au, and valuable transition elements are recovered by leaching of alloy of Si and Fe.
