FIELD: automatic control and computer engineering; digital automatic machines for adding/subtracting numbers coded by three-level signals using orthogonal components of Popov functions. SUBSTANCE: method depends on shaping two pairs of three-level signals using Popov wave functions $$$. The latter are represented by two orthogonal components $$$. Each number $$$ and $$$ from $$$ = 0 to $$$ = q-1 in number systems with bases q=4 and q=8 are presented by phases $$$. Each phase $$$ is coded by signal levels $$$ and $$$. Orthogonal components of Popov functions $$$ are determined by comparing corresponding trigonometrical functions $$$ with thresholds at argument values $$$. For adding phases, signals $$$ and $$$ are shaped and for subtracting them, signals $$$ and $$$. The latter are codes of sum and difference of addends $$$, $$$.
