FIELD: computer engineering. SUBSTANCE: method involves generation of two three-level signals using Popov wave functions popq(ϕ), which are represented by means of two orthogonal constituents popq(ϕ) = copq(ϕ)+isipq(ϕ).. Each integer kx and ky from kx,y = 0 till kx,y = q-1, in notation systems with base q = 4 and q = 8 are represented by phases ϕx,y = 2πkx,y/q. Each phase ϕx,y is encoded by values of signal levels copq(2πkx,y/q) and sipq(2πkx,y/q). Values of orthogonal constituents of Popov functions copq(ϕ) and sipq(ϕ) are detected by comparison to thresholds ±ξ of respective trigonometric functions cosϕ and sinϕ for argument values ϕ = 2πk/q. Phase addition is performed by generation of signals copq(s) and sipq(s),; phase subtraction by copq(-s), sipq(-s),, which represent codes of sum and difference of items kx and ky.. Phase addition and subtraction follows standard equations for addition and subtraction of phases of sine waves. EFFECT: increased functional capabilities due to encoding of numbers by means of three-level signals, their addition and subtraction in notation systems with bases q=4 and q=8. 3 cl, 15 dwg, 41 tbl
