FIELD: medicine; production of high-purity barium sulfate for use in roentgenology as radiopaque agent. SUBSTANCE: powders of precursors (barium compounds and ammonium sulfate) are mixed together in weight ratio 1:(1.0-1.2), i. e. in stoichiometrical ratio or with slight excess. Mixture is subjected to heat treatment in water vapors under pressure 15-270 atm and at temperature 200-400 C. It is preferable that barium-containing reactant and ammonium sulfate be taken in weight ratio equal, respectively, to 1:(1.0-1.2). High-quality radiopaque preparations produced for barium sulfate consist of crystal with optimum size 2-20 mcm. Besides, high-purity barium sulfate is used as reflecting scatterer in infrared- and ultraviolet-spectometry.
