FIELD: prevention of fires of spilled oil or oil products on extended objects. SUBSTANCE: the offered method includes mixing of ingredients of gel-forming composition, its foaming and application to surface of spilled oil. Composition is applied directly to areas which are adjacent to one another and also covering the entire perimeter of protected surface of the ground to width L which is determined by relation L, where ρ is air density; V is wind velocity; h is height of foam cover; τ is limit tangential stress of foam shear. Composition is used in form of gel of the following composition, %: KMTs 0.3-2; ML-80 1-3; NaCl 2-10; KhKK 0.02-0.1; NaOH 0.05-0.15; the balance, fresh water.
