FIELD: metal heat treatment; applicable in manufacture of pipes of oil assortment. SUBSTANCE: pipe made of carbon or low-alloyed steel is cooled with water after leaving the last mill stand. In this case, cooling of pipe external surface is began from 800-840 C for 3-5 s at mean rate of 30-40 C/s for 6-10 cycles with duration of intensive cooling in cycle amounting to 0.2-0.35 with intervals between cycles of 0.15-0.2 s. EFFECT: extended assortment of hardened pipes and use of low-cost carbon steels of grades 20, D and low-alloyed steels of 37G2S type for production of high-strength pipes. 1 tbl
