FIELD: analytical methods in environmental monitoring. SUBSTANCE: invention is designed to control effluents of surface and industrial waste waters, for example, drilling fluids and also to estimate toxicity of newly-synthesized chemicals, etc. Sample of chemical substance is allowed to affect suspension of test-culture cells Paramecium Caudatum, after which changes in the test culture are determined by photometric technique. Toxicity of chemical substance is evaluated from decrease in moving activity of sample of the test-culture cell suspension (SA) in presence of toxic agent as compared to the same quantity in pure (reference) suspension using the following expression: KT= CT/SA where KT is coefficient of toxicity of chemical substance, CT concentration of toxic agent in the test-culture cell suspension. Decrease in moving activity of test-culture cells is determined from expression: SA= (1-Jt/Jr)•100 where Jt is reference sample indication mean and Jr test sample indication mean.
