FIELD: ecology.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the field of ecology and construction of roads and can be used for determining the toxicity of soils and man-made ground by the biotesting method using Colpoda steinii infusoria. A sample of soil contaminated with man-made materials is extracted with water or acetone, filtered resulting in a transparent solution, the toxicity of the sample is estimated by the test reaction of the infusoria, and the toxicity of the soil sample is determined from the survival rate of the infusoria within 1 hour for the analysis of an aqueous solution of a 1% acetone extract or within 3 hours for the analysis of an aqueous soil extract by the formula:
wherein: Qtot is the total initial amount of infusoria, pieces; Qs is the amount of surviving infusoria at the end of the test, pieces. The analysed materials are therein classified by toxicity as practically non-toxic with a toxicity within 20%, low-toxic with a toxicity within 21 to 40%, moderately toxic with a toxicity within 41 to 60%, dangerously toxic with a toxicity within 61 to 80%, highly dangerously toxic with a toxicity within 81 to 100%.
