FIELD: nonferrous metallurgy. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to reducing cerium contained in fluoride-containing ores such as bastnasite. Ore is crushed, baked, and leached with dilute hydrochloric acid to form ore concentrate. The latter is treated by hydrochloric and boric acids to dissolve cerium and convert fluoride into tetrafluoroborate ion. This ion is removed from solution, e.g. by precipitation, and solution is additionally treated to reduce cerium under conditions preventing loss of cerium in the form of insoluble cerium tetrafluoroborate. EFFECT: reduced loss of cerium under recovery operation. 56 cl
