FIELD: organic chemistry, chemical technology. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to method of synthesis of new 2,4-dihydroxy-4-carboxy-3-X-butane-4-olides (X - OH or Cl). Furfurol is oxidized with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of base followed by acid addition and isolation of the end products. Vanadium compounds are used as catalysts. Yield is 65-73%. Synthesized compounds are identified by methods of IR- and PMR-spectroscopy, mass-spectrometry and element analysis. EFFECT: increased yield, accelerated reaction. 5 cl, 1 tbl
