FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to organic synthesis and specifically to a method of producing 5-hydroxy-2(5H)-furanone, which is used as a semi-product when producing carotenoids, growth regulators, herbicides, anthelmintic, protein-depositing pharmaceutical agents. The method of producing 5-hydroxy-2(5H)-furanone involves reaction of furfurol with hydrogen peroxide in electrochemical anodic synthesis conditions: on graphite electrodes at 25-55°C, current 0.01-0.05 A, voltage 2-10 V in the medium of aqueous solution of an alkali metal perchlorate, in the presence of vanadyl sulphate, with molar ratio of furfurol, hydrogen peroxide, electrolyte and vanadyl sulphate equal to (0.25-1.0):(0.6-2.6):(0.02-2.0):(0.00015-0.0006), respectively, followed by separation of the end product by extracting with ethyl acetate.
EFFECT: simple process, high environmental and fire safety, shorter reaction time and high output of the end product (up to 55%).
