FIELD: chemical industry. SUBSTANCE: present invention describes methods of preparing 2-(alpha-phenyl-alpha(ethyl)phenylacetyl) indandione-1,3 known as ethylphenacine. Said compound is blood anticoagulant and highly toxic rodenticide for controlling rodents, especially effective against gray rats. The claimed method comprises reacting 1-phenyl-1- (ethyl) phenylacetone, dimethyl phthalate and sodium alcoholate at molar ratio of reactants of 1: 1.1-1.5: 2.25-2.5 in the presence of xylene solvent at 130-134 C, and binar azeotropes of the resulting alcohols with xylene are simultaneously distilled off. EFFECT: reduced excessive amount of the reactants used. 9 ex
