FIELD: petroleum processing. SUBSTANCE: invention, in particular, relates to additive for thermal and catalytic cracking, viscosity breaking, pyrolysis, and oxidative bitumen production. Additive is prepared by treating, with ozone- containing gas, petroleum products containing at least 0.65% of sulfur-containing (on conversion to sulfur) and at least 3.6% polyarene compounds where preferred weight ratio of polyarene compounds to sulfur ranges from 5:1 to 20:1. Base material for additive may be vacuum gas oils or heavier residual fractions, or pyrolysis tars, or their mixtures. Ozone treatment is carried out advantageously at 15-60 C until saturation. EFFECT: improved plasticity and frost-resistance characteristics produced in presence of additive. 5 cl
