FIELD: nitrogen compounds industry. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to ammonia conversion methods and can be used in production of nitric acid, hydrocyanic acid, and also hydroxylamine sulfate. Ammonia conversion is accomplished by passing gas mixture including ammonia and oxygen-containing gas through two- bed catalytic system: platinoid gauzes bed followed by honeycomb oxide nonplatinoid catalyst. In the gas mixture jets moving over honeycomb canals of the second-bed catalyst, ratio of average working speed to sound speed is maintained within a range of 0.00048 to 0.024. With this condition, 86-97% of ammonia is converted in the first catalyst bed. First-step catalyst employs metal compositions selected from the series, wt. %: Pt, 92.5; Pd, 4; Rh, 3.5; Pt, 81; Pd, 15; Rh, 3.5; Rv, 0.5; Pt, 92.5; Rh, 7.5; Pt, 95; Rh, 5; Pd, 95; and Ni, 5 (catalyst and sorbent of platinoids). Second-step catalyst: ferric oxide, 92; chromium oxide, 8; ferric oxide, 89.5; zirconium oxide, 5; magnesium oxide, 5; zirconium-barium oxide, 0.5; ferric oxide, 79; aluminum oxide, 20; magnesium oxide, 1; ferric oxide 79.7; aluminum oxide, 20; vanadium oxide, 0.3; perovskite, 90; aluminum oxide, 8; silicon, 2. EFFECT: increased ammonia conversion and reduced platinoid loss. 4 cl, 1 tbl, 12 ex
