FIELD: inorganic compounds technology. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to high-temperature catalytic conversion of ammonia in two-stage catalytic system in production of nitric acid. Process involves passing gaseous reaction mixture containing ammonia and oxygen-containing gas through two-stage catalytic system comprising, in direction of gas mixture travel, honeycomb-structured inert charge bed, first stage in the form of platinoid grids, and second catalyst stage with regular honeycomb structure. Ratio of equivalent diameter of catalyst channel to equivalent diameter of inert charge channel is (0.901.3):1, ratio of open surfaces of catalyst beds to those of inert charge is (0.7-1.2):1, and ratio of hydraulic resistance value of regularly honeycomb-structured catalyst bed to that of inert charge bed is (0.5-1.0):1. EFFECT: increased yield of desired product and prolonged lifetime of the first stage of catalytic system. 1 tbl, 4 ex
