FIELD: petrochemical industry. SUBSTANCE: lower aliphatic alcohol such as methanol is reacted with C4-C6 fractions containing 30-90 wt % C4-C6 diene hydrocarbons at weight ratio of diene hydrocarbons to C4-C6 tertiary olefins of (1-10):1 in hydrocarbon fraction on cation-exchange resins at elevated temperature and pressure. Reaction is carried out at molar ratio of methanol to tertiary olefins plus diene hydrocarbons of (0.5-1.0):1. After separation, spent hydrocarbons are recycled into reactor in amount of 0.5- 5.0 weight parts per 1 weight part of original hydrocarbon stock. Reaction products are preferably separated in one or two rectification columns. The claimed method makes it possible to process production waste such as hydrocarbon fractions having high content of dienes into valuable high octane oxygen-containing gasoline components and to make cheaper method of preparation of high octane motor fuel components. EFFECT: more efficient preparation method. 2 cl, 1 tbl
