FIELD: railway transport; condition checking facilities. SUBSTANCE: method of checking is based on forming raster of M fanned out rays in direction of wheel movement, with N rays in each fan, and registration of reflected rays by means of MxL photodetectors, measuring time intervals between M x N x L responses of photodetectors and calculating parameters of deviation of wheel tread surface form standard form by comparing measured intervals with known distribution of valves of intervals for standard form. Proposed method is implemented by means of device which has measuring rail, identical optical measuring units installed on rail and electronic signal processing unit. Each optical measuring unit has light source and diffraction grating. EFFECT: provision of more complete information on form of wheel tread surface and defects of surface. 3 cl, 5 dwg
