FIELD: instrumentation.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to instrumentation and can be used to control rolling stock state. In compliance with proposed method, rolling stock wheel rolling surface is irradiated by light radiation generated by triangulation transducer. Then wheel rolling surface transverse profiles are determined to construct lengthwise profiles of the wheels on their basis. To estimate wheel ellipticity and excess, spectral analysis is used. Data signal comprising info on wheel rolling surface defects is isolated and cluster analysis is used to pinpoint the defects.

EFFECT: comprehensive data on availability, distribution and character of defects on rolling stock wheel rolling surface.
