FIELD: technique for measuring geometry parameters of wheel pair of moving stock changing at exploitation and important for safe movement. SUBSTANCE: method comprises steps of irradiating wheel by light source; receiving pattern of reflected light spots; mounting irradiators and photodetectors symmetrically for left and right wheels relative to track; forming symmetrical sets of light beams for left and right wheels in horizontal and vertical planes at least with two parallel beams in each plane and at mutual position of beams in each set determined according to dimensions of elemental cone surfaces and diameter of wheels; modulating coherently sets of light beams for left and right wheels; controlling height of beams over rail heads; converting spatial sets of received light spots to data of geometry parameters of separate fragments of profiles of right and left wheels including conicity angle of elemental surfaces; joining separate fragments of profiles while taking into account instantaneous values of beam height to complete profiles of wheel working surfaces; identifying pairs of coherent light spots of left and right wheels received from symmetrical light beams (reduced to identical height); evaluating geometry parameters of wheel pair and its spatial position relative to track according to mutual spatial shift of light beams of each pair while taking into account conicity angle of elemental surfaces. EFFECT: simultaneous monitoring of several parameters such as crossing angle of axes of wheel pair, lateral shift, diameter difference of wheels of pair, wear degree of wheel working surfaces and wheel rims at taking into account oscillation and shock load caused movements at any motion speed of moving stock. 4 dwg
