FIELD: metal machining, in particular, production of toothed gears by means of multiple-head machines. SUBSTANCE: method involves placing primary and finishing cutters in cradle so that their rotational axes are equally spaced from cradle rotational axis; rotating cradle about its rotational axis during transfer from primary to finishing machining to change tool position; providing additional third cutter for finishing machining, with each finishing cutter being adapted for machining respective tooth side. Finishing cutter is mounted so that in operating position its rotational axis is offset relative to middle end plane of workpiece. In the process of changing the position of tool, during transfer from primary machining to finishing machining of concave or convex tooth sides cradle is rotated through angle below or in excess of central angle between two radii drawn from center of rotation of cradle through axes of primary and finishing cutters.
