FIELD: petroleum processing. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to processes of extended processing of crude oil by conversing petroleum fractions in presence of hydrogen. Method is intended for production of diesel fractions by mild hydrocracking of vacuum gas oil with elevated conversion of fraction above 360 C. Method consists in bringing into contact petroleum raw materials at 390-420 C, pressure 4.0-6.0 MPa, and space flow velocity 0.5-1.5 hr-1 with preliminarily sulfided catalyst containing active hydrogenous components: molybdenum oxide and nickel and/or cobalt oxide on porous aluminum oxide carrier prepared by preliminarily adding phase-forming promoters to basic carrier. As promoters, utilized are, individually or in combination: solutions of phosphoric, nitric, and hydrochloric acids, rare-earth metal elements, aluminum nitrates, gamma-alumina powders, and boric acid. As above-mentioned hydrogenous components, utilized are: molybdenum and nickel or cobalt salts, or complex formed by adding cobalt or nickel nitrate to aqueous solution of peroxomolybdophpsphate with general formula [P2Mo5O23-x(O2)x](NH4)6 where x= 1 or 2 at Ni(Co)/Mo/P ratio (0.8-1.8): (1.1-2.5): 1.
