FIELD: pyrolytic processes. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to pyrolytic processes used in forestry engineering to dispose wood waste and in agriculture to dispose, in particular, straw, corn, husks, millet, rice, cotton, etc. Invention aims at most completely isolating and utilizing compounds contained in biomass, producing activated carbon, and possibly using biomass as environmentally allowable pure fuel. For that, in a method of thermally processing biomass including loading material into converter and pyrolysis of material followed by separating pyrolysis products and discharging solid residue, pyrolysis is carried out at 650-950 C under atmosphere of reducing gas prepared with air-uptake coefficient α = 0.4-0.85. In order to produce activated carbon, overheated steam at temperature above 500 C is fed into pyrolyzed biomass at steam to material weight ratio (0.01-0.05):1. Reducing gas is fed into biomass pyrolysis process at its ratio to material (0.3- 0.5): 1. EFFECT: improved process efficiency and environmental condition. 3 cl, 1 dwg
