FIELD: metallurgy, in particular, steels used in mechanical engineering for manufacture of structures subject to impact-abrasive wear and operating at temperatures below minus 40 C. SUBSTANCE: steel KARTEKS 400 contains the following components, wt.%: carbon, 0.14-0.20; manganese, 1.3-1.7; silicon, 0.20-0.70; chromium, 0.3-0.8; nickel, 0.10-0.30; boron, 0.0005-0.005; aluminum, 0.014-0.042; copper, 0.1-0.3; calcium, 0.0065-0.075; nitrogen, 0.007-0.014; iron, the balance. Aluminum-nitrogen ratio is maintained within 2-3. Brittleness temperature of the steel is below minus 40 C. EFFECT: improved cold resistance with preservation of high hardness. 2 tbl
