FIELD: petroleum processing. SUBSTANCE: sulfur constituents of liquid hydrocarbon stock are oxidized with 50-100% nitric acid into sulfoxides, sulfones, and sulfonic acids, after which hydrocarbon stock is distilled. Nitric acid is added in quantity from 0.4 to 2.0 mole per 1 mole of total sulfur. High-boiling oxidation products remain in vat residue of distillation process, and distillates are obtained with low level of sulfur.
