FIELD: agriculture, selection. SUBSTANCE: method is designated for construction of transgenic plants exhibiting resistance to damages caused by insects and can be used in transformation of totipotent protoplasts by vector containing structural gene that encodes polypeptide of crystalline protein δ-endotoxin in Bacillus thuringiensis. Before transformation tissue of nonmatured embryos is isolated, cultured to formation of special callus type. Callus is treated with enzyme preparation to obtain totipotent protoplasts and the latter is subjected for transformation for fertile plants generating. Regeneration of plants from protoplast cells ensures to use somatic hybridization for producing the improved species of Zea mays L.
