FIELD: chemistry of polymers. SUBSTANCE: present invention describes multistep radiationally hardenable latex polymers, process for preparation thereof and coating composition comprising water and polymer. Polymer is prepared from first-step copolymer and second-step copolymer. First-step copolymer is prepared from comonomer mixture comprising comonomer promoting formation of cross links in amount of less than 10%, preferably 1-5%, based on weight of first-step copolymer, and monomer or mixture of monomers selected from group consisting of metacrylic acid esters, metacrylic acid, itaconic acid, styrene, substituted styrene, butadiene, acrylonitrile, ethylene and vinyl acetate. Second-step copolymer has α,β-unsaturated functional carbonyl groups that promote hardening when exposed to ultraviolet radiation. First-step to second-step copolymer weight ratio varies from 20:80 to 70:30, preferably from 30:70 to 50:50. When preparing multistep polymer, α,β functional unsaturated carbonyl groups are partially neutralized by means of base. Polymer having partially neutralized groups is made to react with monoethylenically unsaturated epoxy compound. Coating composition comprises water and multistep polymer. Coating exposed to UV rays has superb resistance to solvents, water resistance, and resistance to coloring and to hot print. Composition is used in glues, paints and coatings for leather and wood.
