FIELD: manufacture of carbon filaments from polyacrylonitrile bundles, in particular, complex high-strength carbon filaments used for producing high-quality composite materials. SUBSTANCE: method involves subjecting polyacrylonitrile bundles formed as tapes to oxidation and carbonation, with each bundle being composed of 4-120 complex twist threads with twisting angle not exceeding 2 deg; separating tapes and further separating each bundle into component carbon filaments with linear density 10-200 times below that of bundles; fastening bundles with filling threads. Method allows capacity of equipment to be maintained and even increased upon transfer from production of carbon filaments with linear density of 240-816 tex to production of thin carbon filaments with linear density of 4-204 tex.
