FIELD: automotive industry. SUBSTANCE: method diagnosing gas distributing mechanism of internal combustion engine includes measurement of linear translation of valves by angle of turn of crankshaft, evaluation of output characteristics of internal combustion engine, for instance, specific fuel consumption or any other characteristic, repeated measurements for another profile of cams of camshaft, judgment of parameters of gas distributing mechanism by results of comparison of output characteristics of internal combustion engine by criterion of specific fuel consumption or by any other criterion. Cam profile corresponding to optimal one is chosen by results of three tests as minimum. In this case valves are given additional linear translation due to hydraulic forces acting in accord with law specified in advance independent of profile of cams of camshaft, experimental dependence of summary translation of valves on rotation angle of crankshaft for each test is obtained, optimal value of this dependence is found and equivalent profile of cams of camshaft is computed.
