FIELD: mining industry. SUBSTANCE: method relates primarily to coal industry and can be applied generally for preventing disasters in underground workings. In compliance with method, methane-coal-air mixture is ignited at earliest stage of its penetration into mine. Used for this purpose is system of ignition initiators which are arranged along longitudinal axis of mine section. This system is actuated before methane-coal-air mixture penetrates into mine. After actuation, ignition initiators function permanently. Useable as ignition initiators is kerosene lamp, electric lamp, electric coil or incandescent thread. Application of aforesaid method and device reduces probability of occurring explosion. Design of device is simplified. EFFECT: higher efficiency. 13 cl, 2 dwg
