FIELD: electrical engineering.
SUBSTANCE: protection device incorporates a protective tank connected to the main tank via a pressure relief line with a gate valve and a membrane-type decoupling element. The protective tank top accommodates a screen with metal balls arranged thereon. The protective tank communicates with atmosphere by a pipe in front of which a collapsible protective film is arranged just above the metal balls. Given a short-circuit condition, the main tank pressure rapidly ups to break down the aforesaid membrane, to reduce pressure and to blow out explosive gases and oil vapors into the protective tank at high temperature of the transformer oil. Nitrogen available in the protective tank eliminates a possibility of fire and explosion of the said gases and vapors. A heat-accumulating layer of metal balls reduces the temperature to 70°C thus preventing fire and explosion of gases passing through the pipe into atmosphere with the membrane broken down. A damping layer arranged along the transformer tank walls prevents high-rate vibrations, pressure increase rate and its magnitude.
