FIELD: selection of quality wood to manufacture musical instruments. SUBSTANCE: invention is meant to establish character of possible change of surface microhardness of wood according to year rings and transition zone between early and latewood. Microhardness in this case is established by indentation of needle within strictly definite interval after each 0.05 mm in examined sample in the form of radial core. Automatic recording of indentation depth by means of digital readings gives possibility to plot diagrams with accuracy not less than 0.05 mm and to determine hardness of wood in year rings in zones of early, transition and late tracheids which in the long run makes it feasible to diagnose resonance properties of wood.
