FIELD: refrigerating engineering. SUBSTANCE: method provides for control of defrosting of refrigerator at any mode of operation; it is based on measuring external temperature, number of cabinet door opening cycles and duration of compressor operation unit time interval. Each case of operating mode is assigned predetermined severity factor. Mass of frost formed during unit time interval is determined by multiplication of duration of compressor operation by severity factor at this mode of operation. Masses of frost are accumulated for many unit time intervals. When mass exceeds magnitude, defrosting is performed. Defrosting device includes defrosting heater, external temperature sensor, door opening cycle counter, compressor time relay and unit for control of defrosting heater.
