SUBSTANCE: new protected bicyclic amidines of formula I wherein A is selected from -CR¹R²-CR³R⁴-CR⁵R⁶-; -CR¹R²-CR³R⁴-CR⁵R⁶-CR⁷R⁸ or -CR¹R²-CR³R⁴-CR⁵R⁶-CR⁷R⁸-CR⁹R¹⁰ wherein A substituents are enumerated beginning from nitrogen atom, and B is selected from , and R¹ and R¹⁴ independently from each other are hydrogen, C₁-C₄ alkyl, R¹⁵-R¹⁸ independently from each other are hydrogen, C₁-C₄ alkyl, or at least one of R¹⁵-R¹⁸ is amino- , C₁-C₄-alkylamino-, or C₁-C₄ alkyl substituted by amino group or C₁-C₄ alkylamino group, and method of preparation thereof. Amidines are useful as catalysts to prepare polyurethanes and they are strongly bonded with polyurethane. One stage method comprises reacting lactone of general formula II wherein A is as defined above, with at least equimolar amount of general formula: H₂N-B-NH₂ (III) wherein B is as defined above on heating to at least 150 C in the presence of acid catalyst, and reaction mixture thus formed is subjected to fractional distillation without isolation of intermediate product.
