FIELD: resting of railway and automobile cisterns for airtightness. SUBSTANCE: electromagnetic waves of radio-frequency range are radiated inside cistern with its neck closed by radio filter, and radio waves passed through slits in cistern walls are received. Absence or presence of radio waves indicates whether cistern is airtight or not. Device for method realization has generator of electromagnetic oscillations of radio-frequency range, one transmitting and N receiving antennas, where N is at least two, N radio-wave receivers, N indicators of receiving antenna signals, and radio-wave filter. Generator output is connected to transmitting antenna input, outputs of receiving antennas are connected to inputs of their receivers, and outputs of receivers are connected to inputs of their indicators. Transmitting antenna is positioned inside cistern, while receiving antennas, outside. Directivity patterns of adjacent receiving antennas are overlapped partially on external surface of cistern.
