FIELD: operation of storage batteries. SUBSTANCE: method is based on determination of increment of density of electrolyte of lead-acid cell in function of time when cell is under condition of standing without current after charge. In this case density of electrolyte is found by measurement of emf and temperature of electrolyte in cell that are used to compute density of electrolyte and its increment for corresponding time interval with the aid of known and established dependencies. Self-discharge of lead- acid cell is computed by increment of density of electrolyte under condition of standing without current after charge. Taking into account great effect of electrolyte temperature on self-discharge of lead-acid cell there are established coefficients of change of self-discharge in function of electrolyte temperature and self-discharge is determined with allowance for average electrolyte temperature for corresponding time period of standing of lead-acid cell without current after termination of charge. EFFECT: increased accuracy of determination of self-discharge of lead-acid cell. 5 tbl
