FIELD: laser apodization optics. SUBSTANCE: invention can find use in work with solid-state and gas lasers employed in laser technologies, science research, laser installations developed by programs of laser thermonuclear fusion. Process forming soft diaphragm on basis of clear dielectric plate for apodization of light beams in nearest ultraviolet, visible or nearest infrared ranges of wave lengths λ consists in creation of zone having width Δr that scatters, reflects or absorbs radiation in aperture of dielectric plate with characteristic dimension r0, lateral coordinate r and thickness l, made of discrete cells with controlled form and dimensions Δrc and arranged on surface or in volume of plate in correspondence with specified profile of diaphragm transmission T(r). In this case summary specific effective cross-section of these cells determining dissipation of radiation energy grows from axis to edge of plate in agreement with law σ(r) ~ 1-T(r) and dimensions of separate cells are related to depth Δl of treatment of dielectric plate and to distance Lmin to boundary of formation of smooth distribution of intensity in beam.
