FIELD: oil refining; applicable in processing of residual oil products. SUBSTANCE: raw material- petroleum residue is supplied to vacuum column simultaneously with supply thereto of liquid flow from hot separator which contains dispersed catalyst-metal of IV-VIII groups in amount of 0.03-0.10 wt. %. Withdrawn from column is diesel fuel component, vacuum distillate (360-520 C) and fraction boiling out above 520 C (tar). Tar is supplied to unit for preparation and dispersion of catalyst with addition of catalytic additive containing metals of IV-VIII groups. Then, hydrogen-containing gas is added, and after heating, mixture is supplied to reactor. Catalyzate coming from reactor is directed to hot high-pressure separator with liquid product returned to vacuum column. Vapors from separator is supplied to hot high-pressure separator, and then, to cold separator. Hot flows from hot low-pressure separator and cold separator enter atmospheric column where they are separated into hydrocarbon gas, components of gasoline and diesel fuel. Vapors from atop of cold separator containing, mainly, hydrogen-containing gas are mixed with fresh hydrogen-containing gas and supplied for mixing with tar, recycle and catalyst prior to their heating. EFFECT: improved technical-and-economic indices due to increased degree of tar conversion and increased output of fractions boiling up to 520 C, reduced consumption of catalyst, power and capital costs. 1 dwg, 1 tbl
