FIELD: decontamination of radioactive materials. SUBSTANCE: decontamination process includes bringing materials to be decontaminated in contact with carbonate- containing thinned solution in environment of ion-exchange particles incorporating chelate functional group or bonded with it and separating ion-exchange particles from carbonate- containing thinned solution. Radioactive materials being decontaminated may be natural materials such as soil or man- made ones such as concrete or steel. Chelate functional group contains in its composition iminodiacetic acid, 3-hydroxyphenol laricic acid, 8-hydroquinoline or amidoxylene group; carbonate- containing thinned solution whose pH is 7 to 11 incorporates, in addition, oxidizing agent; ion-exchange particles are either magnetic and/or magnetic material containing particles. Radioactive contaminants are removed from dissolving compound simultaneously with dissolving the latter which aids in maintaining minimal concentration of dissolved contaminants.
