FIELD: radio engineering. SUBSTANCE: proposed X-ray tube has anode and cathode placed in working space filled with gas inert to cathode material up to pressure of 0.001 to 0.5 P, where P is chosen from left-hand branch of Paschen curve according to maximum anode voltage and cathode-to-anode distance of X-ray tube. Negative spatial charge of cathode-emitted electrons is neutralized by positive ions of gas inert to cathode material. Positive ions are produced within cathode-to-anode space of tube due to ionizing interaction between electron flow and gas molecules on their path from cathode to anode. Convective cooling in rarefied gas is essential in particular when operating in pulsed mode. EFFECT: facilitated manufacture, improved service life, and increased output current of anode.
